In un mondo come la Bike Industry spesso capita di incappare in progetti ambiziosi in cui, dalla tenace volontà di una singola persona, nascono progetti e aziende molto interessanti.
É il caso di Dead Rabbit Gmbh fondata da Björn Aeschlimann.
Si tratta di una piccola azienda svizzera che produce MTB custom e progetti molto particolari. In questo articolo andremo a conoscere Björn e come una passione può diventare una vera e propria impresa.
Björn, raccontaci chi sei e un po’ della tua storia.
Sono cresciuto in un piccolo villaggio nell’Emmental. Verso la fine della scuola, ho iniziato a costruire percorsi nel nostro bosco e a partecipare a gare di downhill con i miei amici. Durante la mia formazione come meccanico, ho avuto anche l’opportunità di imparare a saldare con il metodo T.I.G. Poco dopo, ho saldato i miei primi telai BMX e successivamente telai da downhill, assicurandomi di avere sempre la bici giusta per il mio stile di guida.
Come è nato il BRAND Dead Rabbit?
Nel corso degli anni, il mio marchio “Dead Rabbit” è diventato sempre più noto nella scena MTB svizzera, portandomi a fondare “Dead Rabbit bike GmbH” circa 6 anni fa.
Iniziai con il telaio per downhill. Avevo già il telaio pronto in versione alluminio e lo utilizzai in varie gare. Ricevetti un’offerta da un’azienda taiwanese per produrre il telaio in versione carbonio. Ho avuto l’esclusiva del telaio per due anni, dopodiché fu venduto come stampo aperto. In quei due anni, riuscii a creare la mia officina in Svizzera e a procurarmi gradualmente le necessarie macchine e attrezzature. Poiché l’esportazione nell’UE si rivelò più difficile del previsto, decisi di vendere i telai solo in Svizzera per il momento. Attualmente, saldo tutti i telai personalmente, qui in Svizzera. La maggior parte dei telai sono su misura per i clienti, ma creo anche prototipi per aziende più piccole e più grandi.
In modo simile a come è iniziato il tutto in America con le mountain bike, costruendo telai in un piccolo garage, sperimentando per divertirsi, come Tom Ritchey e altri.
Come mai hai deciso di chiamare il tuo marchio Dead Rabbit?
Durante il mio periodo scolastico, ho disegnato la testa di un coniglio durante un test di matematica che non capivo. Anni dopo, quando ho iniziato a saldare i primi telai, non avevo ancora dato un nome alla mia attività. Poi ho ritrovato il disegno di quella testa di coniglio nella mia scrivania e così mi è venuto in mente il nome Dead Rabbit.
MTB personalizzate dal 2016, dalle mtb da Downhill alle trail bikes ed MTB per bambini. Cosa rende una Dead Rabbit unica?
La particolarità sta nel fatto che il telaio o la bicicletta vengono costruiti su misura per i clienti. Ciò significa che la geometria, i componenti e il colore vengono discussi con il cliente, e solo dopo viene realizzato il telaio. Se desiderato, i clienti ricevono periodicamente foto dello stato attuale del loro telaio tramite WhatsApp. C’è solo una piccola serie speciale per un negozio di biciclette; per il resto, sono tutti pezzi unici.
quando realizzi una mtb, quali sono le caratteristiche che ricerchi di più?
Dipende molto da progetto a progetto e da bicicletta a bicicletta. Fortunatamente, nei miei anni più giovani, ho partecipato a tutti i tipi di gare possibili: downhill, cross-country, ciclismo su strada e BMX.
Questa esperienza mi aiuta molto a progettare nuovi modelli e offrire un portafoglio diversificato. Credo che la cosa più importante sia capire che non esiste una ‘bici perfetta’ per tutti. Gli stili di guida e le aspettative possono essere piuttosto diversi. Per questo motivo, quando possibile, cerco di fare una breve uscita con i potenziali clienti per capire esattamente di cosa hanno bisogno.
BJÖRN, sulle tue dead rabbit usi diversi tipi di schemi sospensivi. su che base scegli quale sistema applicare?
La mia scelta dipende soprattutto dalla quantità di escursione in modo da avere sempre un comportamento adeguato rispetto all’uso.
Ad esempio, con 200mm di escursione, fattori come la curva della velocità angolare della ruota, antisquat, antirise, pedal kickback, ecc…, hanno un impatto maggiore rispetto ad un travel di 120mm. Alla fine, il progettista deve sempre decidere come la bici dovrebbe comportarsi e quindi è costretto a trovare un buon compromesso tra le varie necessità.
In che modo la scelta delle componenti cambia il comportamento finale del mezzo?
Le componenti hanno un impatto significativo sul comportamento in sella, per questo motivo cerco sempre di fare una prova in sella con i clienti.
In questo modo posso fare raccomandazioni molto più precise su cosa il cliente necessita. Dal mio punto di vista, oltre al telaio, componenti come le ruote e sospensioni hanno l’influenza più grande sul comportamento del mezzo.
In entrambi i casi sono riuscito a trovare buone soluzioni. Per la maggior parte degli ordini, costruisco anche le ruote in base all’applicazione, al peso, alla rigidità, ecc. Per quanto riguarda le componenti della sospensione, collaboro con DT Swiss; hanno un ottimo programma per i piccoli produttori per garantire che gli ammortizzatori si armonizzino con il sistema di sospensione della bici. Tuttavia, non è obbligatorio; in generale, possono essere montate forcelle e ammortizzatori di qualsiasi tipo, a seconda delle esigenze del cliente. Riuscirete a espandere la distribuzione anche al mercato europeo?
Stanno emergendo sempre più eventi e piattaforme per i piccoli produttori. Ad esempio, quest’anno ho partecipato ai ‘Bike Craft Days’ in Germania, dove erano invitati quasi 40 piccoli marchi europei. Questi eventi sono un passo importante per essere riconosciuti al di fuori della Svizzera. Posso immaginare una futura espansione nell’UE, ma sarà necessario stabilire i contatti o trovare partner giusti nei singoli paesi per garantire l’interazione desiderata con i clienti e il servizio.
quali progetti hai per il futuro?
Non posso rivelare ancora troppo a riguardo, ma in futuro offrirò anche componenti prodotte direttamente da me. Con i prossimi acquisti per la mia officina, si apriranno molte più possibilità.
Sono previsti anche altri modelli. Sicuramente entro la fine del 2024 sarà lanciato il telaio gravel.

DEAD RABBIT INTERVIEW: CUSTOM MTBS FROM SWIZERLAND
In a world like the Bike Industry it often happens to stumble upon ambitious projects where, from the tenacious will of a single person, very interesting projects and companies are born.
This is the case of Dead Rabbit Gmbh founded by Björn Aeschlimann.
This is a small Swiss company that produces custom MTBs and very special projects. In this article we will get to know Björn and how a passion can become a real business.
Björn, TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR STORY.
I grew up in a small village in the Emmental. Toward the end of school, I started building trails in our forest and participating in downhill races with my friends. During my training as a mechanic, I also had the opportunity to learn how to weld using the T.I.G. method. Soon after, I welded my first BMX frames and later downhill frames, making sure I always had the right bike for my riding style.
HOW WAS BORN YOUR BRAND Dead Rabbit?
Over the years, my brand “Dead Rabbit” has become increasingly well-known in the Swiss MTB scene, leading me to found “Dead Rabbit bike GmbH” about 6 years ago.
I started with the downhill frame. I already had the frame ready in aluminum version and used it in various races. I received an offer from a Taiwanese company to produce the frame in a carbon version. I had exclusive rights to the frame for two years, after which it was sold as an open mold. In those two years, I was able to set up my workshop in Switzerland and gradually obtain the necessary machines and equipment. Since exporting to the EU proved more difficult than expected, I decided to sell the frames only in Switzerland for the time being. Currently, I personally weld all the frames here in Switzerland. Most of the frames are custom-made for customers, but I also create prototypes for smaller and larger companies.
Similar to how it all started in America with mountain bikes, building frames in a small garage, experimenting for fun, like Tom Ritchey and others.
WHY YOU DECIDE TO CALL YOUR BRAND Dead Rabbit?
During my school days, I drew a rabbit’s head during a math test that I did not understand. Years later, when I started welding the first looms, I still hadn’t named my business. Then I found the drawing of that rabbit head again in my desk, and so the name Dead Rabbit came to me.
Custom MTBs from 2016, from downhill to trail bikes and children’s MTBs. What makes a Dead Rabbit unique?
The uniqueness lies in the fact that the frame or bike is custom built for the customers. This means that the geometry, components, and color are discussed with the customer, and only then is the frame made. If desired, customers receive periodic photos of the current state of their frame via WhatsApp. There is only one small special series for a bike store; otherwise, they are all one-offs.
WHEN YOU CREATE A mtb, WHICH ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU LOOK FOR MOST?
It depends a lot from project to project and bike to bike. Fortunately, in my younger years, I participated in all kinds of races possible: downhill, cross-country, road cycling and BMX.
This experience helps me a lot in designing new models and offering a diverse portfolio. I think the most important thing is to understand that there is no ‘perfect bike’ for everyone. Riding styles and expectations can be quite different. For this reason, whenever possible, I try to have a short outing with potential customers to understand exactly what they need.
BJÖRN, ON YOUR dead rabbit YOU ARE USING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SUSPENSIVE SCHEMES.
HOW YOU CHOOSE WHICH SYSTEM TO APPLY?
My choice mainly depends on the amount of travel so that I always have appropriate behavior with respect to use.
For example, with 200mm of travel, factors such as the wheel angular velocity curve, anti-squat, anti-rise, pedal kickback, etc., have a greater impact than with a 120mm travel. In the end, the designer always has to decide how the bike should behave and thus is forced to find a good compromise between the various needs.
How does the choice of components change the final behavior of the bike?
Components have a significant impact on riding behavior, which is why I always try to do a test ride with customers.
That way I can make much more precise recommendations on what the customer needs. From my point of view, besides the frame, components such as wheels and suspension have the biggest influence on the behavior of the bike.
In both cases I was able to find good solutions. For most orders, I also build the wheels according to application, weight, stiffness, etc. For suspension components, I work with DT Swiss; they have a very good program for small manufacturers to ensure that the shocks harmonize with the bike’s suspension system. However, it is not mandatory; in general, any type of forks and shocks can be fitted, depending on the customer’s needs. Will you be able to expand distribution to the European market as well?
More and more events and platforms for small manufacturers are emerging. For example, this year I attended the ‘Bike Craft Days’ in Germany, where nearly 40 small European brands were invited. These events are an important step to be recognized outside of Switzerland. I can envision future expansion into the EU, but it will be necessary to establish contacts or find the right partners in individual countries to ensure the desired customer interaction and service.
WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?
I can’t reveal too much about it yet, but in the future I will also offer components produced directly by me. With the upcoming purchases for my workshop, many more possibilities will open up.
Other models are also planned. Definitely by the end of 2024 the gravel frame will be launched.
